Did You Join an EAA Class?

The Eastern Iowa Arts Academy, or EAA, has started up again, and it's better than ever! It includes Clay Club, African Percussion, and Dance Team! Speaking of dancing, do you all remember Mrs. Crowley? Well, some of you might not, because she was here a couple of years ago. She taught 5th grade here before she went to the middle school to teach Science. Well, she's leading the Dance Team, along with her daughter. So, if you're in the Dance Team, be sure to welcome Mrs. Crowley back to Madison!

Also, 5 Live! News congratulates EAA on receiving an award for Best Children’s’ Programming in Eastern Iowa, the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance’s “Icky” Award.

Disasters in Haiti
Have you heard about the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti? Most Haitians survived, but thousands of them lost their lives in this disaster. More then 10,000 buildings and homes were demolished. Then 8 days later, an aftershock hit Haiti once again. This has caused children and adults to starve. And thanks to some people in our community and around the world, help is coming to the kids in Haiti. More on what you can do to help in a bit.
Smart Board: It is SOOOO Smart
We are getting a Smart board in the computer lab! The Smart board was supposed to be hung up on Wednesday, but there were some problems in hanging it up. The smart board is interactive; it can be used as a touch screen, an overhead, or you can watch movies on it! Sometime this summer or fall we will get smart boards in all of the classrooms. We think our show might soon, within two years, be shown in the classrooms on their Smart boards. We would need to stream our show live online and have each class's computer pick it up and show it. With the current wires and TVs getting older, the Smart boards are coming at the right time.
Half-Day at Madison
Half-Day. . . . Hooray! Do you ever wonder what teachers do after everyone else leave on a half day? Well, we know! They just have meetings and do work. But, Mrs. Duthler said she likes to meditate with nature, eat, and dream about the Packers winning. The Packers winning? That IS a dream!
A Look at Bob, the 'Robo-Cop'
Here's a little more about our Lego League team. They got to see an ISU demonstration of their wind tunnel while in Ames. Also, Nick said the hotel pool and food were great. So, would you like to see the robot Bob in action? He uses light sensors to "see" his way around the track. Mitchell and Eli programmed Bob for the course you are about to see. Here is Bob, the Robo-Cop: (video) OK, that's just plain cool.
More About the Disaster in Haiti
Madison is seeing red! We are wearing red to show our support for the country Haiti. Well, The American Red Cross is doing something to assist families in need. But, the number one thing they need is money. So, we're having a collection box from the 20th, until next Tuesday, the 26th to help them. What this means is, we should bring in some spare change to help. So be a cheerful giver and wear red!
Why did Clay Club split?
Do you know why the Clay Class split into two classes? Well, they split because of how many kids signed up for the Clay Class. Can you believe almost 50 kids signed up? Grades K and 1st are having their first class today at 3:45 to 4:45, but all the other weeks, they will be on Thursday. Grades 2nd through 5th had their first class this past Tuesday at 3:45. Hope all you guys have fun!
Our New Grandma, Mrs. Lehman
Do you remember Mrs. Beckelheimer, our old music teacher from two years ago? Well, Mrs. Lehman is her mom! Mrs. Lehman has just recently become a grandmother. Yes, Mrs. Beckelheimer just had an adorable baby boy named Michael. Michael weighs 9 pounds and 2 ounces. Mrs. Beckelheimer is happy she doesn't have to stay up all night with him. Mrs. Lehman said she is hoping for more grandkids. Congratulations Mrs. Lehman!
Community Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Monday, it was Martin Luther King Jr. day! Actually, his birthday is the 15th of January. He was an African-American, who started out as a preacher, but then turned to Civil Rights protesting. He gave many speeches, but the most memorable was the 'I Have a Dream' speech. We celebrate this day in honor of Dr. King, because he helped change the world by saying that everyone should be able to do what they want, no matter what the color of their skin.
Kids Love Snow Days
So far this year, we have had four snow days. Our make up days for the four days are March 4th, June 7th, June 8th, and June 9th. We will probably have more snow days: good for now, not so good for June.
Recess Crews Build Towers
Do you remember the battle of the towers between Mr. Fred and Mr. Casey? Last week we showed you the video on Mr. Fred's tower. His class built a tall tower with those math counting blocks. This week we are showing you the video on Mr. Casey's class tower, which is pretty impressive, too. Here's Pearl on the scene. (Video) Thanks for the great interview Pearl.
