Pennies for Patients

Do you know about Pennies for Patients?  It is how Madison is raising money for a good cause.
First you get a little box in your class.  Then you put change in it like dollar bills, change, and checks.
This money is going towards people in Iowa with Leukemia and Lymphoma.  The winning class gets a pizza party or a Pendant that is gold, silver, or bronze.

What Timing!!!

Two students from the fifth grade lost a tooth at the same time!  Their names are Legos and Perry.
Has Madison School ever seen two teeth lost at the same time, especially in the same class?

There have been a lot of changing around of librarians lately.   We are so glad to welcome our new librarian here at Madison.   Her name is Mrs. Rose.  Perry had a chance to chat with her.  (video)

Students Complete Unit 3 Tests

We went to Mrs. Fowler and we asked her about the online computer assessment.  And she said this test helps teachers find out if kids are on grade level in reading.  It’s either 25 or 30 questions;  it depends on the grade level.  This test should take about an hour to finish if you take your time.  So kids, take your time and you will do well.

Third Grade Activities
In Mr. Casey’s class, and Mrs. Englebrect and Mrs. Patterson’s class, they just finished their Madison Press stories.  This week they took their mid-year math assessments.  Also, Mr. Casey said the kids are enjoying Junior Achievement and a new science unit on sound.  We hope you guys have fun!
Dental Assistant Makes House Call

This week on Monday, a dental assistant came and talked to the third grade.
Her name is Katie Milden.  She is in her last year of dental school and is graduating in June.  Right now she is working at St. Luke’s Hospital.  When she was here, they talked about what cavities are, how they start, and how to prevent getting them!   She also discussed how to brush and floss your teeth the right way, why we have to go to a dentist, and what a dentist does.  We hope she made the dentist seem less scary!

Total $$ Raised for Haiti

And now a 5 Live! exclusive!  We have the results of the money we raised to help Haiti.  We raised a total of $864.68.  Madison students wore red recently to show support for the victims of the Earthquake.  Student Advisory kids helped with the effort.  Way to go all you Mustangs!

The Real Reason We Have Indoor Recess

Have you ever heard of the snow snakes Cyrus and Clad?  Well if you haven’t, we will tell you.  They are the reason that we don’t go out on certain winter days.  Cyrus and Clad have blood-red eyes.  They can camouflage into their surroundings, but their blood-red eyes cannot camouflage.  Mr. Girdner says they love to eat little kids, . .  especially second graders.  (video)
Stay on it, Slowhand!  . . .  More later.

Closing Notes
Hey 4th graders, enjoy the brass quintet this morning!
And next Friday is a half day, and we will be on at the end of that day, at 11:50 am.
Don’t turn off your TVs!  Right after the credits, we will have Mrs. Rose join us for a LIVE! drawing to see who won the popcorn party!
We’re here with Mrs. Rose.  The Library contest this year is to write book reviews on books you’ve read this year.  The winning name will be drawn out of the box.  The winner’s class then gets to have a popcorn party to celebrate.  (Mr. C’s Class won.)
